Background
After the Haitōrei Edict of 1876, which banned the wearing of swords, Sukesada was the only swordsmith who continued his craft.
It was extremely difficult to survive as a swordsmith in a time when swords were no longer needed. He had no students to carry on his work.
His only support was his determination to preserve the Osafune tradition. Although he made great efforts to train a successor, his wish was never fulfilled. The long and proud history of the Osafune swordsmiths—once said to number in the thousands—came to an end with him.
