Background
This swordsmith was active from the late Muromachi period to the early Edo period and is said to have received the character “Kiyo” from Kato Kiyomasa.
The Dodanuki school was a group of swordsmiths based in Higo (Kumamoto), serving under Kato Kiyomasa, a powerful warlord of the Sengoku period. Emerging at the very end of the Koto period and into the early Shinto period, they quickly gained a strong reputation across Japan. The school is considered to be descended from the Enju tradition of Higo.
During the Japanese invasions of Korea, known as the Imjin War, the Dotanuki smiths accompanied Kato Kiyomasa to Korea, where they actively forged swords. Their blades proved exceptionally effective in real combat, earning them a lasting reputation as some of the most powerful and practical cutting swords.
